Benagil is the cave with the hole in the roof, about forty minutes east of Lagos by boat. It is the most photographed spot on the Algarve coast, and it is busy from mid morning onwards.
Trips leave from Lagos, Portimao, Armacao de Pera and Benagil beach itself. The closer the departure point, the shorter and cheaper the trip, but a Lagos departure passes the Ponta da Piedade cliffs on the way.

Common questions
- Can you still walk into Benagil cave?
- No. Entering the cave on foot from the beach is not permitted, and swimming in is restricted. The usual way to see it is from a boat, a kayak or a stand up paddleboard on a guided trip.
- How long is a Benagil cave tour?
- From Lagos, most trips run between two and three hours because of the distance along the coast. Trips leaving from Portimao or Benagil itself are shorter, often around an hour.
- Is a boat or a kayak better for Benagil?
- A boat covers more caves in less time and is steadier. A kayak gets inside the smaller openings a boat cannot enter and is the only way to land on the sand inside on some tours. Kayaks need reasonable fitness.
- What is the best time of day to visit Benagil?
- Early morning. The light comes through the roof opening, the sea is calmest, and there are far fewer boats inside the cave than at midday.
